The city was founded by tycoon Henry Flagler (also known as the father of Miami) as a community to house servants working in his two grand hotels on the neighboring island of Palm Beach. The Town of West Palm Beach was formally incorporated in 1894, and the city saw rapid growth in the 1920s during the Florida land boom. It was during this time that many of the city's landmark structures were erected, and their renovation in the 1990s coincided with a downtown resurgence after many years of neglect. Clematis Street, West Palm Beach's historic shopping venue, is home to Clematis at Night, and outdoor event held on the street featuring live music and food offerings.
